Throughout Machine, Hakel, and Kusa's journey they must face eight Gym Leaders, in each region of course, to gain a Gym Badge. The Gym Badges allow for different skills when working with pokemon. For example the Boulder Badge which, all three have gained in Pewter City increases the attack power of a person's Pokemon. When all the eight Gym Badges are obtained in that specific region, the party moves on to their true test of the strength: the Pokemon League Conference.
Each gym leader specialises in different types of pokemon and are profficient in their abilities. Each of them have some type of relation to the original Gym Leaders of their Gyms (excluding Lt. Surge and Erika):
- Forrest: He is the younger brother of Brock and second oldest within his list of siblings.
- Sakura: In the anime, her name is Daisy and she is the oldest of Misty's sisters.
- Janine: She is the only child of Koga, who has recently died.
- Natsume: In the Japanese Pokemon Franchise, this is what Sabrina's name is. However, Pokemon Red Star, Sabrina has taken on this name to hide her identity from Team Rocket.
